Creating a home office that supports your productivity and well-being goes beyond choosing the right furniture or technology. The way you arrange your workspace can influence your energy, focus, and creativity. Feng Shui, the ancient Chinese art of placement, offers practical guidance to help you position your desk in a way that optimizes the flow of chi, or life energy, in your home office.
In this post, I will share insights from a recent YouTube video titled “Don’t Set Up Your Home Office Until You Try This Feng Shui Trick!” and explain how to use your personal kua number to find the best desk placement. I’ll also describe my own experience balancing the need for a commanding position with the desire to enjoy natural light and a pleasant view in my apartment layout.
Understanding Feng Shui and Chi in Your Workspace
Feng Shui focuses on arranging your environment to promote harmony and positive energy flow. In a home office, this means setting up your desk and surroundings to support concentration, reduce stress, and invite success.
The concept of chi is central to Feng Shui. Chi is the invisible energy that flows through spaces and affects how you feel and perform as explained in my Deeper Than Design Series. Episode 5 is a great visual reference point of layout work I did in my home. When chi moves freely and smoothly around your desk, you are more likely to feel energized and focused.
One key Feng Shui principle is the command position. This means placing your desk so you can see the door without being directly in line with it. The command position helps you feel in control and aware of your surroundings, which can boost confidence and reduce anxiety. I follow the command position more closely now than ever before but sometimes we have to make sacrifices depending on the space.
How Your Personal Kua Number Guides Desk Placement
Your personal kua number is a Feng Shui calculation based on your birth year and gender. It identifies your best directions for health, wealth, relationships, and overall energy. Using your kua number, you can determine the ideal orientation for your desk to maximize positive chi.
To find your kua number, you can use online calculators or follow these steps:
For men: Add the last two digits of your birth year, reduce to a single digit, then subtract from 10.
For women: Add the last two digits of your birth year, reduce to a single digit, then add 5. If the result is two digits, reduce again to a single digit.
Once you have your kua number, you can look up your auspicious directions. For example, if my kua number is 8, my best directions are northeast, west, southwest, northwest.
Balancing Command Positions and Natural Light in My Apartment
When I set up my home office, I faced a common dilemma: should I prioritize the command position or the view and natural light? My apartment layout offered two main options:
Place the desk in the command position, facing the door but away from the window.
Place the desk near or adjacent to the window to enjoy natural light and a pleasant view, but with my back partially to the door.
Using my kua number, I identified the directions that would support my energy. The command position aligned with none of my auspicious directions. After careful consideration, I chose to place my desk adjacent to the window to benefit from natural light and a calming view, while still maintaining some awareness of the door through peripheral vision.

This choice improved my mood and focus during work hours. I already had this large vintage mirror angled to reflect the patio door, which helped me feel more secure and in control without sacrificing the benefits of natural light. If I hadn't already purchaesd this mirror I would have been able to put my desk in more of a command postion facing SW vs NE. Lesson learned, do not buy any big furniture pieces until you have a feng shui layout in new spaces.

Practical Tips for Applying Feng Shui Desk Placement
If you want to try this Feng Shui trick in your home office, here are some practical steps:
Calculate your kua number to find your best directions.
Identify the command position in your room: a spot where you can see the door without being directly in line with it.
Consider natural light and views that make you feel calm and energized.
Balance your choices by combining auspicious directions with comfort and practicality.
Use mirrors or plants to enhance chi flow and create a pleasant environment.
Keep your desk clutter-free to allow chi to circulate freely.
Test different arrangements and notice how each affects your mood and productivity.
Why Desk Placement Matters More Than You Think
Many people underestimate how much their environment influences their work performance. A poorly placed desk can cause distractions, stress, and low energy. Feng Shui offers a simple, non-invasive way to improve your workspace by aligning it with your personal energy and the natural flow of chi.
By paying attention to your kua number and the command position, you create a workspace that supports your goals and well-being. This approach is especially valuable for remote workers, freelancers, and anyone spending long hours at home.

Choosing where to place your desk is more than a design decision. It affects how you feel, how well you focus, and how much energy you have throughout the day.
