The entryway is the first place energy enters your home. It's the mouth of the home in Feng Shui. When clutter piles up here, it can block positive energy and create a chaotic feeling. In small apartments, this problem is even more common because space is limited. Using feng shui principles to design your entryway can change this. It helps create a calm, organized, and welcoming space that supports good energy flow, beauty and sets the tone for the rest of your home.
In this post, I share how I designed my front entryway in a small Calgary apartment using feng shui. I’ll walk you through three practical storage ideas that improve organization and energy flow. These ideas are easy to apply and perfect for anyone looking to bring balance and intention to their home’s first impression.
Why Feng Shui Matters in Your Entryway
Feng shui is an ancient Chinese practice focused on arranging spaces to promote harmony and positive energy, or chi. The entryway is especially important because it acts as the gateway for energy entering your home. If this area is cluttered or poorly arranged, it can block energy and create stress and confusion.
You can see my Deeper than Design - Episode 1 to see how I used the Bagua map to inform the flow of my entryway.
In small apartments, every inch counts. Thoughtful design can turn a cramped, cluttered entryway into a functional and peaceful space. When you apply feng shui principles, you encourage smooth energy flow. This is where the energy moves the fastest so we must use decorative items to help slow the flow down in this sector.
Storage Idea 1: Use Vertical Space Wisely
Small entryways often lack floor space, so using vertical storage is key. Shelves, hooks, and wall-mounted organizers keep things off the floor and create a sense of openness.
How I applied this:
In my Calgary apartment, I installed a slim, gold, standing metal shelf with a coat rack in one. This shelf also acts as a wardrobe nook holding jackets heavily used, small items like keys, sunglasses, dog leashes, bags and mail. Below, are shelves to hold all my most worn shoes seasonally. Easy to reach for and swap out as the climate changes. This setup keeps essentials within reach but off the floor and wall, reducing clutter and improving energy flow.
Tips for your entryway:
Choose narrow shelves/shelving units that don’t protrude too far into the walkway area.
Avoid hanging shelves/hooks too close to the door! I see this far too often and it's a total Chi killer. It blocks not only the energy but people from entering/exiting the doorway with ease. It also looks cluttered the closer it is the doorway.
Use decorative baskets or trays on shelves to keep smaller items contained. This holds the objects energy vs letting it leak around the space it sits in.
Install hooks at different heights to accommodate coats, bags, and scarves.
This vertical approach frees up floor space and keeps the entryway feeling open and inviting.
Storage Idea 2: Incorporate Multi-Functional Furniture
In small spaces, furniture that serves more than one purpose is a game-changer. A bench with storage, a mirror that opens up with hidden shelves or hooks, an ottoman with hidden compartments, or a console table with drawers can provide seating and storage without crowding the space.

How to pick multi-functional pieces:
Look for furniture that fits your space without blocking pathways.
Prioritize pieces with storage (open/hidden) to keep clutter at bay.
Choose designs that complement your entryway’s style and color scheme to maintain harmony.
Multi-functional furniture supports feng shui by combining practicality with simplicity, helping energy flow smoothly.

Storage Idea 3: Create Zones for Different Items
Organizing your entryway by zones helps keep everything in its place and supports a calm environment. Assign specific areas for shoes, coats, bags, and small items like keys or mail.
How I organized zones:
Shoes go neatly on the shelves.
Coats on hangers by the door.
A small box holds daily dog stuff.
Hangers hold keys/leashes/umbrellas/shopping toes so there's no need for hooks in the doorway
This clear separation prevents clutter from mixing and makes it easier to maintain order. It also helps energy move freely without getting stuck in piles of stuff.
Zone organization tips:
Use containers or baskets to define each zone visually.
Label baskets or trays if needed to keep everyone in the household on track.
Keep frequently used items near the door for convenience.
Zoning your entryway supports feng shui by creating clear, intentional spaces that invite positive energy.
Bringing It All Together: Feng Shui Flow and Intentional Design
When you combine vertical storage, multi-functional furniture, and clear zones, your entryway becomes a balanced, welcoming space. Feng shui encourages simplicity and order, which helps energy flow smoothly and supports a calm home environment.
In my small Calgary apartment, these three storage ideas transformed a cluttered drop zone into a peaceful entryway. The space feels open, organized, and intentional, setting a positive tone for the rest of the home.
If you want to improve your entryway, start by assessing your space and thinking about how energy moves through it. Use storage solutions that fit your lifestyle and keep the area clear and inviting. With a little planning, you can create an entryway that supports both function and good energy. If you're still needing support, you can set up a free consultation with me to assess your needs.
